La Sierra Classic Cavalcade
Sierra Occidental
Mexico
Special Offer Available!!
This 'Classic Cavalcade' is one of the best rides Hidden Trails has to offer. Everything is first class from the accommodations, the horses, the trails, the scenery and last but certainly not least your fantastic hosts, Lucia and Pepe Schravesande. Both are enthusiastic riders and love to share their beautiful country with you. They will share their knowledge about the history, the culture and the magnificent Monarch Butterflies that come here over the winter months by the billions. The ride takes place in Valle de Bravo, a town located two and a half hours west of Mexico City, on the Sierra Madre Occidental. The area is unlike any other region in Mexico. When you first drive into the valley you have the feeling you are somewhere in Switzerland. The town is 6,000 feet above sea level and during the trek riders go with horses up over 10,000 feet where fir trees grow and where the Monarch Butterflies come to look for shelter from November to March of each year. The different altitudes create an amazing variety of microclimates where riders can find thriving examples of cold and warm climate species. The sloping terrain allows to easily go from one microclimate to another; riders will have the opportunity to see all what grows around fir trees up in the mountains and come down to the sugar cane fields, all during the same week. Beautiful forests, meadows, valleys, rivers, streams and agricultural land can be seen during your riding week. Several birds endemic from Mexico's Sierra Madre Mountains can be seen during the daily rides. Riders also get to pass by some small villages thus giving the opportunity to see how local peasants live in the area. Never ending views of mountain ranges with impressive huge rocks are part of every day's ride. The always-blue sky makes a perfect frame for the panoramic "vistas" during the day and in the afternoons the spectacular sunsets invite to have a "margarita" and listen to the typical Mexican music of the "mariachi" whilst resting the day's ride.

Today, lunch will also be a picnic in the trail cooked on a fireplace. After lunch continue riding for two hours through evergreen meadows and valleys next to Rivers that hold Trout Farms and beautiful Ferns until you reach "Ranch la Compania". This ranch is one of the oldest ranches of the area where fighting cocks are bred as well as Quarter Horses. Guest can walk around it beautiful patios and gardens. Many peacocks will salute you on your way out by truck from "Rancho Calderones" to the lake shore, where a local boat will be waiting for the group to be transferred across the lake to the main deck in Valle de Bravo. This is a perfect moment for a picture and time to relax and enjoy the trip across the lake. From the boat you will be able to see "La Pena" another rock formation where the Aztecs came to make human sacrifices and which now a days is surrounded by outstanding weekend homes.

Day 6 Before meeting your mount you will cross the lake by boat. This also is a good time to mediate or enjoy this peaceful and quiet boat trip. On the otehr side of the lake the truck will be waiting for you to make a five minute transfer to where the horses slept. Today you will ride along the lake shore until you reach the dam. After crossing by the side of the dam you will continue riding for a couple of hours in what is know as "Tierra Caliente". This land is for what Mexico is generally known for: no forest or shade, just a vast of open valley, all planted and plowed like the olden days. The old Mexican style of working with no tractors or machinery just pairs of oxens, horses or donkeys plowing the land lead by a peasent and followed by his wife or daughter who manually plants one by one the corn seed, strawberries, potatoes and flower plants. Just about the time you are wondering when a tree shade will appear; the horses begin reaching the woods. Fresh wind begins to blow whilst pine and oak trees shade the path and finally a group of rocks set for a fireplace let the riders know lunch time has arrived! After lunch, continue riding for three more hours in a different type of forest, where lots of Spanish Moss hang from the trees. If the river is not too high and with a fast water, experience the exciting movement of crossing the big river! Arrive to San Gabriel Ixtla, a small village where the horses will overnight. This time riders will come back by car to the Finca through a different road.

Day 7 Today the ride is shorter, only half of a day. Riders will arrive to Finca Eyhne on their horses just in time to have lunch in one of the terrances of the property. You will ride through the main street of "San Fransico Mihualtepec." This is an authentic Mexican town where you will be able to see lots of things. See how local people live in their homes and see the housewives enjoy taking care of the many pots with flowers in their Veranda. Watch how the Butcher works and how the traditional "Barbacoa" or "Carnitas" are being cooked. These are traditional meals prepared only by men and where women do not participate in the cooking. They are only invited to eat. This is a "Macho Man" chore. See the fields with all sorts of different flowers: Paradise Flowers, Water Lili,Agapantus,Gladioles, etc. After leaving this interesting town, the biggest Ranch in the area will be visited. This is "Rancho Santa Rosa" where well kept forest, evergreen horse padocks and magnificent contemporary Mexican style homes are all set in harmony. If you are lucky, you will be able to see how the horses that are bred in this ranch are trained for show jumping. Arrive at 1:00 PM to Finca Enyhe just in time for lunch. Today there will be more time to visit the town and do more shopping or if you prefer, enjoy the facilities in the property and have a good and restoring Massage session in the comfort and privacy of your bedroom. At 7:30PM, host and guest will depart to town where a farewell dinner will be offered in a beautiful restaurant in one of the oldest Colonial buidings in town.

Because of its topographic profile, located in the middle part of the mountains that conform the "Sierra Madre Occidental", in the surroundings of Valle de Bravo you can find a great variety of microclimates. Starting form the 10,000 Ft. over sea level, where the mountain forest only have fir trees, coming down to an altitude where pines and oaks are mixed together in the forest, and continue descending to the 5,000 Ft. of altitude to find only the caducifolia jungle typical of the Mexican dry and hot lands. This variety of ecological steps allow the visitors to see during the same day different vegetations and ecosystems that usually cannot be found one close to the other.
The weather in the town of Valle de Bravo is almost perfect during all year round. Early in the morning it is fresh or sometimes a little cold, but as soon as the sun rises the temperature increases and becomes warm. During the day the wind blows and cools the atmosphere with a very comfortable temperature. Sometimes during the afternoon a short rain may fall but from November to May this doesn't usually occur. The nights are fresh enough to let you have a restoring sleep but you may need an additional blanket or, for the sake of romance, you might want to light the fireplace.
Mexico has the greatest variety of pine and oak trees in the world. More than seventy types of oaks and almost one hundred varieties of pines. Over sixty percent of them are endemic from Mexico (they only grow in this country). An incredible diversity of plant life is the most striking feature of Valle de Bravo. Lots of fruit trees grow in this area; the very well known avocado, orange, lime, lemon, mandarin, plum, apple, pear, peach, berries, and the most Mexican guava, cherimoya, guanabana, jicama, mamey, zapote and chayote. All of them grow together with the most exhilarating and colorful variety of flowers shading the paths and trails where the ride develops.
A helmet is not mandatory in the trail rides but it is always a good idea to use it.
A good hat or big cap can keep the shade on your face and protect it from the sun.
Sun-block cream may be needed also to protect lips, face, neck, arms, and hands.
Short riding boots and half chaps can be lighter that long English or Western boots.
Wide boots that can get caught in the stirrup are very dangerous!
The boots should be comfortable for walking, especially during the visit to the butterflies.
Riders can bring inside the saddlebags a pair of comfortable walking shoes or sneackers.
An extra pair of boots if for any reason you may have problems with the first ones.
English riding pants, jodhpurs, or Western riding jeans, whatever you usually wear.
A light jacket, easy to tie to the saddle in case some cold wind blows during the day.
Another thick jacket or a sweater to be used early in the mornings or late at night.
Long sleeves in your shirt or blouse can help against the sun and the spines.
A bandana or big handkerchief is very useful as towel, cleaner, and against the dust.
A pocket knife is always a practical company hanging from your belt.
