Trans Wales Trail
Wales
Wales
This week offers an unrivalled riding experience as you cover the breadth of Wales, from the English border all the way to the Irish sea. The riding is fast, and riders should be prepared for long days in the saddle, but for those up for the challenge, our longest route represents the ultimate in mountain trail riding. Over 6 days you'll ride through some of the most historic, beautiful and unspoilt country in Britain, using mostly forgotten bridleways, open moorland crossings and several trails over private land. The route passes through 4 mountain ranges – the Black Mountains, Mynydd Eppynt, the Elan Valley and over Plynlimon before we reach the sea and are rewarded with a final gallop on the beach near Aberystwyth.

Day 1 Saturday Arrival on your own or transfer from London at 1 PM. Dinner and overnight. Day 2: Riders are matched to their horses and get to put them through their paces on a local ride of about 10 miles around the valley, over a variety of terrain including some open mountain riding in the afternoon. Lunch is at a country inn, and dinner is back at the farm, before we turn in for an early night in preparation for the long journey ahead! Day 3: We set off in the direction of the coast; 8 miles of rolling farming countryside is followed by 12 miles of fast, open moors – without doubt, a horseman's paradise. If all goes to plan, we have a couple of stops for refreshments at traditional inns, before reaching Builth Wells, where we stay in the traditional 16th Century Caer Beris Manor Hotel for the night Day 4: Staying west of the river Wye, we stop for lunch at a 13th Century inn, The Red Lion, in Llanafan before continuing over the hills to Rhayader. We overnight at the very comfortable Brynafon Country House Hotel Day 5: Today sees us cross the 'Lakeland of Wales', a fast ride following the scenic Elan Valley for 15 miles, with a picnic lunch, and a final 5 miles through a pine forest. We stop at the friendly Bluebell inn for the night. Day 6: Marathon day! 26 miles to the sea but first there is a mountain to negociate with no trail to follow! We reach the sea in the early evening, and are rewarded for our efforts with a spectacularly fast gallop along the firm sand. After 4 days of riding hard, you and your horse will be glad of the lift home, and a memorable day is rounded off with dinner in the pub on the way back. Day 7: After a leisurely breakfast, we tackle a trail high in the Black Mountains, returning to the farm for lunch. In the afternoon, guests are able to visit one of the nearby historic towns – Brecon, Crickhowell or Hay-on-Wye. Day 8: Riders leave after breakfast, having said goodbye to their horses!

Warm comfortable and wind-proof clothing is vital for mountain riding. Riding boots are useful unless you are 'calf-hardened'. Stretch jods or tight fitting track suit-bottoms (as well as tights in winter) instead of jeans (they chafe). You will need a hard hat that fits properly, but not too tightly, however, we do have a supply of approved hats in case you don't have your own. For warmth we advise you wear a cotton sweat shirt, woollen sweater, and / or wind-proof top (long coats are useful). Gloves, neck towel and half or full chaps are optional, but recommended. Casual wear for evening, slippers and toiletries. Sunscreen to protect your face from the sun is also recommended.
Your bags, food for the horses, etc. are all carried by vehicle from one night-stop to the next. Two small bags are better than one large bag, for our support crew to lug in and out of vehicles. For fast riding we carry minimum weight.
